The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
